Pete Hegseth Terminates Navy Chief of Staff

Unexpectedly, the US defense secretary dismissed the chief naval aide on Friday, eliminating an aide who had been central to the government's efforts to reshape the Pentagon.

Key Role in Navy Changes

The former aide, who had been assigned in January, had played a vital role in executing extensive changes to the navy's policy and budgeting offices. Together with Secretary Phelan, a significant political donor who was approved as navy secretary in March, Harrison had according to sources attempted to reduce the influence of the navy under secretary, who typically holds significant authority over overseeing the service's budget.

“He has been relieved of his duties as Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Navy,” a department announcement confirmed. “We thank him for his contributions to the Department.”

Context of Removal

Harrison's termination comes just days after former naval officer Hung Cao, a prior service member who had campaigned for Senate as a Republican last year, was appointed as navy under secretary.

Reports indicate that Harrison and Phelan, who had no military history before their appointments, had moved numerous top assistants who were intended to help Cao adjust to his responsibilities. This decision was allegedly aimed at reduce the power of the under secretary's position.

Larger Context of Administrative Shifts

Harrison's removal follows an extended period of instability under Hegseth's tenure.

  • This spring he directed the military to cut 20% of its four-star generals and admirals
  • Hegseth and Trump have fired over six senior generals since January
  • They have also fired the exclusive female serving as senior commanders
  • In February Hegseth fired General CQ Brown Jr, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff and the second person of color to serve in that role

Recent Controversy

Through a controversial speech before top defense leaders this week, Hegseth sharply denounced diversity and inclusion guidelines and asserted the defense department had in the past transformed into “a progressive-leaning organization.” Many veterans expressed outrage to Hegseth's comments, who before assuming the Pentagon leadership role had been a media personality.
