Latin American Rugby Union Success Stories Drive Men's World Cup Qualification Race

As numerous supporters in the UK concentrate on club early-season performances or debate forthcoming autumn internationals, the battle for 2027 Rugby World Cup qualification continues unabated.

Chile's Historic Achievement

Chile earned their second consecutive appearance at the tournament with a stunning playoff victory over Samoa recently, leaving only a single remaining spot to be claimed for Australia by 2027. Meanwhile, the Paraguayan side stunned Brazil by twenty points in the opening match of their playoff.

The return match is scheduled on Saturday in Jacareí, near São Paulo, while Brazil's squad aims to emulate their women's success and secure qualification for the first occasion.

Upcoming Qualification Clash

Whether Paraguay manages a surprise aggregate victory, or Brazil bounces back after head coach Emiliano Caffera's departure, the lineup for November's Dubai qualification tournament will then be finalized. Namibia, the Belgian squad, and the Samoan side have already secured spots for the Middle Eastern competition from November 8th to 18th.

Global Qualification Developments

Many additional teams have also secured their spots. Hong Kong China sealed maiden qualification following beating Korea by a large margin in the summer, and Zimbabwe will return to the sport's most prestigious stage for the first time in over three decades after winning the Rugby Africa Cup.

Chile's Growing Profile

The knock-on effect of Chile's qualifying triumph means that Los Condores will play against Italy for the first time in November during the fall test series, taking the place of Samoa who must participate in Dubai.

The global governing body's chief executive described Chile an "exciting and fast-emerging power" in confirming the upcoming fixture in Genoa. As domestic rugby markets seek increased attendance, rugby in Chile is buoyant. A capacity crowd of over 20,000 saw the qualifying win in the coastal city, and manager Pablo Lemoine has led the squad on an upward trajectory since his appointment in 2018.

Manager's Notable Career

The 50-year-old ex- Uruguay international prop has been making an impact for decades: recruited by the English club in the late 90s, he famously broke through the English defense to touch down at the 2003 global tournament.

His influence as national coach has been similarly significant: Chile have risen to seventeenth place, their best ranking. During the previous World Cup in France, they were defeated in all matches, allowing over two hundred points and registering 27, including a 71-0 defeat to England.

Nevertheless, they confidently took the positives, and following the tournament draw in Australia on 3 December, Lemoine can start preparations seriously. They hosted Scotland last year, defeated by a significant margin in front of twenty-four thousand supporters, and although they were defeated across both matches by the Uruguayan side in the first qualifying round, they managed a 21-18 away victory in the Uruguayan capital.

Samoa's Qualifying Struggle

The Samoan team, meanwhile, have not missed every World Cup since 1991, but are currently languishing in 16th position in the global rankings. They were without a victory in the recent Pacific Nations Cup, leading to qualifying disappointment versus Chile, and the need to meet teams like Belgium adds additional challenge for the proud rugby nation.

Tournament Format Changes

Beyond specific teams' performances, it is worth noting how different the expanded tournament will appear in the next edition. For the first time, there will be a round of 16 with six pools of four rather than four groups of five. Pool-stage jeopardy is much lower because the top four third-placed sides will additionally advance.

Host Nation and Rankings Consequences

The organizers, the Australian team, are currently placed seventh in the global rankings, meaning they would fall short on a top seed and might face either South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, the French, the English, or Argentina in their group. They could climb into the top six during a packed autumn schedule, though: the English team, the Italian side, Ireland, and France are their opponents, with a match against Japan in Tokyo also scheduled for October 25th.

Wales, meanwhile, are balanced in twelfth place, with the Japanese side below, and the implications of falling to 13th and into the third seeding group are possibly significant.

American Presence and Upcoming Events

Another new dimension for 2027 is the presence of five teams from the Americas: Argentina, the Uruguayan side, USA, the Canadian team, and the Chilean squad – with Paraguay or Brazil potentially making it six. From World Rugby's viewpoint, engagement from the Americas is beneficial, particularly with the 2031 World Cup scheduled to be hosted by the USA, and the host selection for the 2035 tournament was initiated last month.

Immediate Priority

First things first, though. The return match of Brazil v Paraguay sets up a four-team qualifying contest, along with a potential standings change throughout Europe in November. No matter the outcome, Chile's qualification for a second consecutive World Cup has already established them as a clear triumphant example.
