Genndy Tartakovsky Promises to Share New Material Each Week Until Black Knight Moves Forward

The creative force, renowned for iconic productions like Primal, just a short while ago employed an unorthodox approach to breathe life into his long-dormant animated film Black Knight.

He released himself animation reel on Instagram, showing a lone fighter confronting a 20-foot armored warrior. Created over six years ago, this proof-of-concept was meant to demonstrate the feasibility of an adult animated action film.

Studio Hesitation

Even with creative approval from the creator, the studio didn't approve the film. The executive questions reportedly focused on finding the viewership.

They just go, 'Who will watch this?' he revealed. And it's like... isn't it obvious? It belongs to adult animation - that's the audience.

Industry Breakthroughs

This strategic release happens during massive successes in grown-up cartoons like KPop Demon Hunters, which reinforced Tartakovsky's frustration.

For how much longer will I have to wait and see similar works get made? he wondered. Given that this is fresh content, it's not getting made.

Unexpected Response

Unexpectedly, the studio behind Hotel Transylvania offered no resistance. There was no anger, Tartakovsky recalled. Their response was, 'OK, if you feel this is necessary, proceed.'

The test reel has quickly gained attention on social media, particularly after going viral in Latin America.

Consistent Updates

Emboldened by the supportive feedback, Tartakovsky declared his intention to publish more footage each week before the venture moves forward.

He hopes that viewer support will demonstrate to executives - particularly studio leadership - that fans desire more than just established properties.

Target Audience

Most people younger than my generation enjoy animated content and don't treat it as just for kids, he clarified. That's who I'm making this for.

  • Regular footage updates scheduled until production begins
  • Established fan support toward mature animated features
  • Purposeful digital distribution to create excitement
  • Emphasis on fresh narratives rather than existing IP
